Children learn through play. As an occupational therapist who works with children and youth, I use games and toys almost every day to help develop important cognitive, visual perceptual, motor, sensory, social, play and leisure skills. While many different types of activities can be used in therapy, this blog focuses on off-the-shelf games and toys that are accessible to most. Whether you are a therapist, parent, teacher, or a game lover like me, I hope you discover something useful while you are here. Learn a different way to play a game you already own or discover a new game for your next family game night. Either way, just go play. It's good for you!

The OT Magazine named The Playful Otter one of the Top 5 Pediatric OT Blogs.

Basket Case

It's as fun as it looks. Hmmm...

Yes, it's as goofy as it looks. No, I didn't have any trouble getting kids to put it on and try it! Without seeing where you are throwing, can you toss balls into the air and into the basket above your head? It can be lots of fun watching other people try! The headband is adjustable and all pieces are extremely lightweight. It requires very simple assembly to use. I was just thinking how much fun it would be if I had two! Toss the balls into each other's basket.

I wonder if that guy ever regretted posing for that picture on the box.

Try this:
  • Stand in front of a mirror and see if looking in a mirror helps your success rate go up.
  • Throw the balls with the non-dominant hand.
  • Ask someone else to throw the balls and you wear the basket. Can you move to catch the balls?
  • Give someone else the balls and you walk around with the headband hoop on. Can they hit a moving target?
  • Work on spatial relations/position in space, motor planning, eye-hand coordination, coordinated use of both hands, proprioceptive perception, vestibular perception, socialization skills, process skills, values, play and leisure exploration and participation
In the box: Headband hoop (4 pieces - requires simple assembly), 20 plastic balls

 Ages 5+, 1+ players
