Children learn through play. As an occupational therapist who works with children and youth, I use games and toys almost every day to help develop important cognitive, visual perceptual, motor, sensory, social, play and leisure skills. While many different types of activities can be used in therapy, this blog focuses on off-the-shelf games and toys that are accessible to most. Whether you are a therapist, parent, teacher, or a game lover like me, I hope you discover something useful while you are here. Learn a different way to play a game you already own or discover a new game for your next family game night. Either way, just go play. It's good for you!

The OT Magazine named The Playful Otter one of the Top 5 Pediatric OT Blogs.

Holiday Fluxx Card Game

Holiday Fluxx Card Game

Holiday Fluxx, the ever-changing card game, covers Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's. It was my sister's and my go-to card game last holiday season. You aren't going to daydream through this game! Attention and flexibility are a must, as the rules are constantly changing.

It starts with fairly simple basic rules and becomes more complicated as New Rules cards are played. After a goal card is played, everyone works to meet the conditions, and the first person to do so wins the game. Sounded simple to me and the first time I played I naively asked 'You only have to make one match?" The game is difficult to describe considering all the different types of cards and rules, but the directions for each card are written out on that card.
The basic rules are draw one card and play one card per turn. New Rules cards are frequently played and can change the course of the game as soon as they are played. They can also be removed just as quickly. Examples of new rules include:
  • Play 4
  • Hand limit 2 - You can only have 2 cards in your hand, discard the others.
  • Draw 5
  • Get on with it - If not empty handed, discard your hand and draw 3 cards.
  • No-hand bonus - If empty handed, draw 3 cards.
  • Regifting - Move one of your keepers to another player and draw 3 extra cards.
  • Xmas bonus - Draw one extra card and play one extra card.
To name just a few. In addition, keeper, action, and surprise cards can also be played and come with their own sets of rules. A cognitive functioning workout, Fluxx comes in many different themed games. The cards are about the same size as standard poker playing cards.
