Children learn through play. As an occupational therapist who works with children and youth, I use games and toys almost every day to help develop important cognitive, visual perceptual, motor, sensory, social, play and leisure skills. While many different types of activities can be used in therapy, this blog focuses on off-the-shelf games and toys that are accessible to most. Whether you are a therapist, parent, teacher, or a game lover like me, I hope you discover something useful while you are here. Learn a different way to play a game you already own or discover a new game for your next family game night. Either way, just go play. It's good for you!

The OT Magazine named The Playful Otter one of the Top 5 Pediatric OT Blogs.

Bop It! Bounce

Bop It! Bounce

Bop It! Bounce is going to take some practice! Bounce the ball up and down on the unit and follow the commands to get your highest score. Hit it high, hit it low, hit it fast, hit it slow. Each time the ball hits the top of the unit (black part), it will count your score. There are six games to choose from and the unit will tell you the high score to beat when you start a game and your score when you end a game.
  1. Max Bounce - You have 30 seconds to bounce your fastest.
  2. Infinite Bounce - Bounce until you miss.
  3. Hang Time - Catch as much air as you can in 5 bounces (bounce it high).
  4. Right Height - The game will call the shots, hit it high or hit it low.
  5. Little - Middle - Big - Hit it high, hit it low, then hit it in the middle.
  6. Free Form - Bounce it freestyle - any way you want.

Fun for older kids that like a challenge. The ball feels like very firm foam.

Work on eye-hand coordination, manual dexterity, spatial relations, following directions, executive functioning skills, aim, play and leisure exploration and participation
