Children learn through play. As an occupational therapist who works with children and youth, I use games and toys almost every day to help develop important cognitive, visual perceptual, motor, sensory, social, play and leisure skills. While many different types of activities can be used in therapy, this blog focuses on off-the-shelf games and toys that are accessible to most. Whether you are a therapist, parent, teacher, or a game lover like me, I hope you discover something useful while you are here. Learn a different way to play a game you already own or discover a new game for your next family game night. Either way, just go play. It's good for you!

The OT Magazine named The Playful Otter one of the Top 5 Pediatric OT Blogs.

Ooga Booga

Ooga Booga

In the tin: 54 cards

Ooga Booga is a funny memory game that will have you remembering nonsense words and performing silly actions to determine the new chief of your clan. Each of the 54 card will have a picture and either a nonsense word to speak (kiki, moki, ina, yonka, etc.) or a silly action to perform (clap your hands, stick out your tongue, bang your fist on the table, etc.).

Object:
Be the first player to run out of cards.

Set up:
Deal 6 or 8 cards, depending on the number of players. If there are 2 of us, we each get 8 cards. Players keep their stack of cards face-down in from of them.

Play:
The first player turns over their top card and repeats the "word" or performs the action on the card. The second player turns over their top card, repeats the first player, performs the action on their card, then places the card on the first player's card. Cover the word, but let the picture show. The next player now turns over their top card, repeats the first step, then the second step, then performs the new action or word. Place the card on the pile, covering the previous word, but not the picture. As each player lays a new card, the list of steps you will have to remember and perform gets longer and longer. This will go on until someone forgets a word or action. That person will take the line of cards and put them under their pile. A new line is started. The first person to run out of cards wins the game.

Try this:
  • Work on manual dexterity, in-hand manipulation, auditory memory, motor planning, visual memory, visual discrimination, figure ground, sequencing, socialization skills, process skills, executive functioning skills, play and leisure exploration and participation
  • It may be difficult to remember what was said and catch the person who erred. Have an additional person, who is not playing, record the words and actions as you go and check for accuracy. Take turns being the player who sits out a round to do this.
  • Practice the sound as you look at the picture on a card. Go through several cards this way before beginning the game to give the individual an edge.
  • Take out some of the cards, leaving only three or four words. Then add them back in one at a time as the individual progresses.
  • Show each action card and practice the associated action before the game begins.
  • Lay two or three cards in a horizontal line, look at each pictures and say the word. Flip them over so they are face-down and repeat them. Add one new card at a time to the line until you miss.
Ages 7+, 3-6 players
