Children learn through play. As an occupational therapist who works with children and youth, I use games and toys almost every day to help develop important cognitive, visual perceptual, motor, sensory, social, play and leisure skills. While many different types of activities can be used in therapy, this blog focuses on off-the-shelf games and toys that are accessible to most. Whether you are a therapist, parent, teacher, or a game lover like me, I hope you discover something useful while you are here. Learn a different way to play a game you already own or discover a new game for your next family game night. Either way, just go play. It's good for you!

All-Family Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

A portable Rudolph-themed trivia game.

A small (think portable), Rudolph-themed trivia game in a tin. The tin measures 4.5" x 7.5" and the back side of the lid is the game board. There is a path from start to finish with 10 spaces in between. There are small magnetic pawns to use with the board (this game would be easy to play in the car if taking a trip over the holidays). If you have never seen the TV show Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, or have seen it and are not a fan, this game is not for you.

The game board on the back of the lid.
All 100 questions are related to the TV show and have multiple choice answers. Here are a couple of examples:
  • Boss Elf says, "We have dolls that..."
    • Cry, talk, walk, blink and run a temperature.
    • Eat, sleep, burp and crawl around.
    • Dance, sing, giggle and grow hair.
  • What does Fireball say about going to the Reindeer Games?
    • It's a great way to show off in front of the does.
    • Makes antlers grow.
    • You'll never make Santa's team if you don't go.
    • A and B
  • What does King Moon Racer ask Yukon Cornelius, Rudolph and Hermey to do?
    • Return to Christmastown and tell Santa about the Misfit Toys.
    • Beware of the Abominable Snow Monster.
    • Come and live on the Island of Misfit Toys.
Object:
Be the first player to arrive at the finish

Set up:
All players choose a pawn color and and place them on start.

Play:
Players take turns answering trivia questions. If you are correct, advance one space. If you are not correct, stay where you are. Play until someone reaches finish.

Check out other Christmas games I have blogged about on my Christmas Edition post.

Try this:
  • Don't include the multiple choice answers if that makes it too easy.
  • Play right after watching the show so the answers will be fresh in everyone's memory.

  • In the tin: Game board, 100 question cards, 6 magnetic pawns
