Children learn through play. As an occupational therapist who works with children and youth, I use games and toys almost every day to help develop important cognitive, visual perceptual, motor, sensory, social, play and leisure skills. While many different types of activities can be used in therapy, this blog focuses on off-the-shelf games and toys that are accessible to most. Whether you are a therapist, parent, teacher, or a game lover like me, I hope you discover something useful while you are here. Learn a different way to play a game you already own or discover a new game for your next family game night. Either way, just go play. It's good for you!

The OT Magazine named The Playful Otter one of the Top 5 Pediatric OT Blogs.

Heads & Tails

Heads & Tails includes 15 2-piece, self-correcting puzzles, all common animals. These 2-piece puzzles each measure 5 1/8" square when assembled. Animals include, monkey, skunk, cat, raccoon, turtle, deer and fox. Some of the animals are facing right and some of them are facing left. Some of the head pieces are tabs and some of them are blanks.

Self-correcting means that none of the pieces will fit where they don't belong, so kids can play alone and know if they assembled each puzzle correctly.

Try this:
  • Place the head from one puzzle in front of the player. Place the matching tail, plus other non-matching tail pieces, randomly on the table. Ask the individual to choose the correct tail and assemble. Then reverse and give then the tail first.
  • Gather the pieces for several puzzles and place them face-down on the table. Play a game of memory/match. Turn over two at a time and try to complete a puzzle.
  • Talk about animals and habitats as you play. Sing Old McDonald. Make animal sounds.
  • Place all the animal head pieces on one side of the table and all the tail pieces on the other. Can you assemble them all?
  • Work on visual discrimination, visual closure, manual dexterity, process skills, executive functioning skills, play and leisure exploration and participation
In the box: 15 self-correcting 2-piece animal puzzle sets
