Children learn through play. As an occupational therapist who works with children and youth, I use games and toys almost every day to help develop important cognitive, visual perceptual, motor, sensory, social, play and leisure skills. While many different types of activities can be used in therapy, this blog focuses on off-the-shelf games and toys that are accessible to most. Whether you are a therapist, parent, teacher, or a game lover like me, I hope you discover something useful while you are here. Learn a different way to play a game you already own or discover a new game for your next family game night. Either way, just go play. It's good for you!

Rats! Card Game

Rats! Card Game

Rats! card game promises a Rowdy Rat Racin' game. Sounds fun, but can they live up to their hype? Let's see.

Rats! consists of cards only. Reading is not required, but the ability to recognize and count numbers 1-4 is necessary. Your goal is to collect the whole deck of cards to win. The cards measure 3 1/8" x 4 1/2". They are bigger than your average poker sized playing card and may be a little difficult for small hands to manage. You can always leave your stack on the table top and pick off your cards from there. The cards show these two types of colorful images:
  • Random Rats - 38 cards that show a couple of rats doing random ratty things. You can see two of them in the image above. In one they are making faces and in the other they are eating candy. There are nine different scenes altogether.
  • Big Fat Rats - 16 cards that show a single rat with a single cheese number from 1-4. You can see one of them in the image above with the number 3.
Object:
Collect the whole deck.

Set up:
Deal out the whole deck to the players. Each player holds his deck, face-down, in this hand.

Play:
Players take turns. The first player turns his top card face up on the table. If he played a random rat, his turn is over and the next player places his first card on top of the first card. However, if the first player played a big fat rat card, the next player must play a big fat rat or the first player get all the cards in the pile. If he did play a big fat rat, the number on the card tells the next player how many cards he can play in an attempt to play a big fat rat card also. If he does not, and plays only random rats, the first player gets the pile of cards and adds them to the bottom of the card stack in his hand. If the second player does play a big fat rat, then the next player has that many chances to play a big fat rat also. Any amount of people can play their turns as long as they keep playing a big fat rat on their turn. After a player takes the pile, the next player plays the top card from the deck in his hand and it starts all over. Play until one person has all the cards and wins the game.

Rowdy rat racin' riot? You make the call.
