Children learn through play. As an occupational therapist who works with children and youth, I use games and toys almost every day to help develop important cognitive, visual perceptual, motor, sensory, social, play and leisure skills. While many different types of activities can be used in therapy, this blog focuses on off-the-shelf games and toys that are accessible to most. Whether you are a therapist, parent, teacher, or a game lover like me, I hope you discover something useful while you are here. Learn a different way to play a game you already own or discover a new game for your next family game night. Either way, just go play. It's good for you!

Spot It! Alphabet

Reinforce the alphabet in a fast-paced card game.

What can I say about Spot It! that I haven't already said? Nothing, really, since I've already blogged about different versions multiple times! I will put links at the bottom of this page so you can go check out the basics of the game from a past post. The rest of this post will just be about this particular theme - alphabet.

Spot It! comes in many themes and since it's one of my favorite cards games, I have used several of them in therapy. The Spot It! game was sold to another company several years ago and the new owner said they were going to manufacture more games with new themes. I've seen a couple of spots versions, specific to particular states, come out, but nothing more. A shame.

You might want to check out one of the other posts at this time to get the idea of the game.

The image above shows you basically what the Spot It! Alphabet cards look like. This is a junior game, meaning fewer cards and fewer items on each card. Each card will either have all alphabet, five letters and one symbol (heart or star) or four letters and two symbols (heart and star). The letters are all upper case and the individual will have to recognize them in different orientations (see image above).

It can be a fun game if you're working on letter recognition. If the player does not have the skills to go head-to-head on a speed basis, I just put two cards side-by-side and let them find the match.
