Children learn through play. As an occupational therapist who works with children and youth, I use games and toys almost every day to help develop important cognitive, visual perceptual, motor, sensory, social, play and leisure skills. While many different types of activities can be used in therapy, this blog focuses on off-the-shelf games and toys that are accessible to most. Whether you are a therapist, parent, teacher, or a game lover like me, I hope you discover something useful while you are here. Learn a different way to play a game you already own or discover a new game for your next family game night. Either way, just go play. It's good for you!

Little Kid Monopoly

Little kid Monopoly

Monopoly... one of the oldest board games of the 20th century. If you've never played it before, where have you been. There are a lot of skills involved in playing this game, from an OT standpoint, and yet these kid-themed versions are still fun for kids and much less time consuming than the original. As a matter of fact, we had the original Monopoly game as kids and it could drag on for so long that we gave it the nickname "Monotony". These kid versions can play in as little as 30-45 minutes.

There are many, many different themes for the kids and original version Monopoly games. Late-for-the-Sky is a brand that puts out many kid-opoly versions that basically play and look like the original version. They also put out games based on the original version (large bills, more property, buying houses and hotels, etc.), so if you are a Monopoly fan there are lots and lots of different themed games out there.

Here are a few reasons I like this kid-friendly version and use it in therapy:

  • A game only takes 30-45 minutes to complete.
  • The bills come in denominations of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Easier counting.
  • There are no equivalents of houses or hotels to buy.
  • There are only 16 spaces for sale instead of 28.
  • The card pile that you draw from on the board also includes some gross motor activities so you will even have a chance to get up and move around.
