Children learn through play. As an occupational therapist who works with children and youth, I use games and toys almost every day to help develop important cognitive, visual perceptual, motor, sensory, social, play and leisure skills. While many different types of activities can be used in therapy, this blog focuses on off-the-shelf games and toys that are accessible to most. Whether you are a therapist, parent, teacher, or a game lover like me, I hope you discover something useful while you are here. Learn a different way to play a game you already own or discover a new game for your next family game night. Either way, just go play. It's good for you!

The OT Magazine named The Playful Otter one of the Top 5 Pediatric OT Blogs.

Car Care & Safety

Car Care & Safety Bingo is a game I made to work with kids who are getting ready to drive and need some basic information on car care, maintenance, and safety.

More than just a standard call-and-cover bingo game, teaching bingo games offer clues and the opportunity for the students to learn facts and definitions, and then test their memories.

Objects on the bingo cards include information about car jacks and spares, coolant and motor oil, calling a tow truck, hazard triangle, winter survival, cell phone use, what to do if you have car trouble on the road, importance of car maintenance and much more.

There are 30 different bingo cards, each with a 5 x 5 grid. There are 28 calling cards. Each card has 3 clues/definition and the same picture that is on the bingo card. You can see examples of both on the preview above.

No bingo chips are included. Try pennies, dried beans, paper clips, jelly beans, etc. Print and laminate for longer use.

I've made lots of bingo games, many about life skills, and have kept the price very affordable.
