Children learn through play. As an occupational therapist who works with children and youth, I use games and toys almost every day to help develop important cognitive, visual perceptual, motor, sensory, social, play and leisure skills. While many different types of activities can be used in therapy, this blog focuses on off-the-shelf games and toys that are accessible to most. Whether you are a therapist, parent, teacher, or a game lover like me, I hope you discover something useful while you are here. Learn a different way to play a game you already own or discover a new game for your next family game night. Either way, just go play. It's good for you!

The OT Magazine named The Playful Otter one of the Top 5 Pediatric OT Blogs.

Cyber Dilemmas in a Jar

Cyber Dilemmas in a Jar

In the jar: 101 cyber dilemmas for teens or tweens

Work on online safety, social media concerns, privacy issues, cyber bullying, texting, ethics

Cyber Dilemmas in a Jar includes 101 challenging dilemmas, relevant to today's world, to present to tweens and teens for discussion. This little jar of scenarios will save you the work of compiling them on your own. Each scenario is printed on a card. No answers are given, then are just topics for discussion. I found them all relevant to kids today, and many of them I would never have thought of myself. Topics covered include Facebook, emailing, texting, uploading photos online, cyber bullying, online safety and chat rooms. This is my favorite of the In A Jar activities, a very important topic to discuss with kids. A couple of examples of dilemmas in this jar:
  • You find out your friend has figured out your password and has been reading your email. What do you do?
  • Someone starts a fake Twitter account in your principal's name. It's really funny, and you don't think it really hurts the principal since she doesn't know about it. What do you do?
Other In A Jar products I have blogged about.
