Children learn through play. As an occupational therapist who works with children and youth, I use games and toys almost every day to help develop important cognitive, visual perceptual, motor, sensory, social, play and leisure skills. While many different types of activities can be used in therapy, this blog focuses on off-the-shelf games and toys that are accessible to most. Whether you are a therapist, parent, teacher, or a game lover like me, I hope you discover something useful while you are here. Learn a different way to play a game you already own or discover a new game for your next family game night. Either way, just go play. It's good for you!

Wash & Dry Bingo

Wash & Dry Bingo

Wash & Dry Bingo is a game played on a 3 x 3 grid featuring whimsical laundry on a clothes line. There are four bingo cards, printed on both sides, equaling eight cards total. Sixteen clothing options will be called and players will hang matching pieces on their bingo cards. There are summer clothes (swimsuit, shorts, tee shirt), and winter clothes (hat, scarf, mittens). Keep all the pieces in the included laundry bag.

Object:

Be the first to get hang three pieces of clothing in a row.

Set up:

Give each individual a bingo card. Place the 16 caller tiles in the laundry bag. Give each player a set of 16 clothing pieces to use as markers. Determine who will be the caller.

Play:

The caller picks one out of the bag and calls it out. Everyone with the matching clothing item on their bingo card covers it with a marker piece of the same item. Match three in a row and win the game.

Try this:

  • Work on each direction separately before adding them all together. Start with horizontal bingos first, since the clothesline goes from left to right and thus the horizontal line is easiest to see.
  • Put all the marker pieces in a small plastic basket or bowl (laundry basket). Lay the 16 caller cards (or less) on the table and sort the matching laundry on top of them.
  • State when to wear each item as you call it, such as a summer swimsuit, or everyday underwear.
  • Reinforce clothing names by playing right before or after dressing.
  • Use for teaching weather related dressing or recognition of clothing articles when dressing.
  • Use different small items for marking the cards, such as pennies or dried beans. Place several in the hand at one time and bring them to the fingertips one at a time to orient and place.
  • Hold the small stack of calling cards in the non-dominant hand and push each one off the top with the thumb to call.
  • Work on visual discrimination, figure ground, visual closure, spatial relations, manual dexterity, process skills, socialization skills, executive functioning skills, play and leisure exploration and participation

In the box: 4 BINGO cards (printed on both sides - 8 games total), 4 sets of 16 marker pieces, 16 caller tiles, laundry bag
