Children learn through play. As an occupational therapist who works with children and youth, I use games and toys almost every day to help develop important cognitive, visual perceptual, motor, sensory, social, play and leisure skills. While many different types of activities can be used in therapy, this blog focuses on off-the-shelf games and toys that are accessible to most. Whether you are a therapist, parent, teacher, or a game lover like me, I hope you discover something useful while you are here. Learn a different way to play a game you already own or discover a new game for your next family game night. Either way, just go play. It's good for you!

The OT Magazine named The Playful Otter one of the Top 5 Pediatric OT Blogs.

Finger Hoola App

Android Finger Hoola app from the Amazon App Store

This app is challenging but fun. Move your finger(s) in circles to keep the flower moving while the music plays.

Your goal is to keep your bar in the box with the musical note (image above). It's kind of hard to see on the picture, but the bar is the black line in the yellow box, right under the musical note. The faster you move your fingers in circles, the higher you go. Slow down your spinning to make the bar go back down. If you can't keep the bar in the correct boxes, the music will continue to go on until you succeed. The boxes get smaller and more difficult to stay inside of as the difficulty increases. In addition, games increase in difficulty by going from right hand only, to left hand only, to right and left alternately, then to right and left together and then to right and left together at different speeds. One hand can be challenging. Two hands, both going at different speeds...wow!

I suggest that you challenge yourself before giving this game to a client so you can judge which levels are appropriate.  Or just play it yourself. It's a workout! Click on the Amazon image below if you want to see a video.
