Children learn through play. As an occupational therapist who works with children and youth, I use games and toys almost every day to help develop important cognitive, visual perceptual, motor, sensory, social, play and leisure skills. While many different types of activities can be used in therapy, this blog focuses on off-the-shelf games and toys that are accessible to most. Whether you are a therapist, parent, teacher, or a game lover like me, I hope you discover something useful while you are here. Learn a different way to play a game you already own or discover a new game for your next family game night. Either way, just go play. It's good for you!

I SPY Christmas Family Style Puzzle

I SPY Christmas puzzle  - Find the items in the crowded background of Christmas ornaments.

Let me say right off that I love family-style puzzles. They offer the opportunity for the whole family to work together on one puzzle since the pieces are three different sizes - large, medium and small. The kids can start at one end, the adult at the other and they can meet somewhere in the middle.

With that said, even though this box says this I SPY Christmas Puzzle is a family-style puzzle, it is not. The pieces are all the same size. This puzzle is part of the I SPY line of products by Scholastic Books, that most kids and parents are familiar with. The I SPY products are based on figure ground, finding a specific item in a crowded background, and includes games, toys, puzzles and books.

After completing this puzzle, read the rhyme printed on the inside of the box lid and find the items that are hidden on the puzzle image. There are 8 items to find and part of the rhyme is below:

I spy an elephant,
a sun's colorful rays,
A mouse, and
the lute an angel plays.
The puzzle will measure 23.5" x 18" when complete.
