Children learn through play. As an occupational therapist who works with children and youth, I use games and toys almost every day to help develop important cognitive, visual perceptual, motor, sensory, social, play and leisure skills. While many different types of activities can be used in therapy, this blog focuses on off-the-shelf games and toys that are accessible to most. Whether you are a therapist, parent, teacher, or a game lover like me, I hope you discover something useful while you are here. Learn a different way to play a game you already own or discover a new game for your next family game night. Either way, just go play. It's good for you!

Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel Card Game

The Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel Card Game - Squirrel away the most acorns
The Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel Card Game is based on the same whimsical character found in The Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel Board Game. Your furry forest friend is hungry and needs your help to squirrel away the most acorns in this speed-slapping, color-matching game.

The game consists of two different sets of cards: 1) 40 acorn cards and 2) 40 dealer cards. The acorn cards (below left) will show a squirrel next to an acorn. Acorn tops will be either blue, purple, gold or red. The thinner dealer cards (below right) come in their own little box and will show either one squirrel, or one squirrel with either one or two colored acorns above his head. These acorns tops will match the colors on the acorn cards.

Object:
Have the most cards at the end of the game to win.

Set up:
Sort the acorn cards into four stacks by color, then place the stacks in the middle of the playing area where all players can reach them. Shuffle the dealer cards and place them face-down in the dealer box.

Play:
Choose a dealer to start the game. Players will take turns being the dealer and the dealer does not engage in the slapping when he is dealing. The rest of the players will play at the same time (not take turns). The dealer will turn one card after another face-up on a stack. When he turns up a squirrel-only card he must say "Sneaky". When he turns up a squirrel card that also shows an acorn(s), he must say "Snacky". When the dealer says "Snacky", all players will race to see who can be the first to slap the stack with the matching color acorn top. The first hand on the stack gets one card from the stack. If two acorns are showing on the dealer card, players race to be the first to slap one or both of the piles with the matching colors. Winners get the top card from each stack. Once a snacky card have been player, the deal is passed to the player on the left. Keep playing until all the dealer cards have been turned. Players count the cards they have collected and the person with the most is the winner.

Try this:
  • Hold the deck of acorn cards in the non-dominant hand and, pushing the top card off with the thumb, take the card with the dominant hand for sorting into piles.
  • Place the deck of acorn cards face-up in a stack on the table top. One at a time, pick up the top card and sort it into one of four piles by color. Try not to topple the stack or pick up more than one card at a time as you work.
  • Call the color each time you place a dealer card with an acorn, such as "Snacky red".
  • Place the acorn cards randomly on the tabletop, face-up. Place some of them right-side-up and some of them upside-down. Choose one color and pick up each card of that color where it is (not pulling it to the side of the table first) and pass to the non-dominant hand to hold until you have them all. When you pick up an upside-down card, turn it in-hand before passing it to the non-dominant hand to hold.
  • Place the acorn cards randomly on the tabletop, face-up. Ask the player to gather the cards, one at a time, as you call them by color.
  • Work on visual discrimination, color matching, processing speed, motor planning, manual dexterity, socialization skills, process skills, executive functioning skills, play and leisure exploration and participation
In the box: 40 acorn cards, 40 dealer cards, dealer box
