Children learn through play. As an occupational therapist who works with children and youth, I use games and toys almost every day to help develop important cognitive, visual perceptual, motor, sensory, social, play and leisure skills. While many different types of activities can be used in therapy, this blog focuses on off-the-shelf games and toys that are accessible to most. Whether you are a therapist, parent, teacher, or a game lover like me, I hope you discover something useful while you are here. Learn a different way to play a game you already own or discover a new game for your next family game night. Either way, just go play. It's good for you!

Stretchy Mice and Cheese

Stretchy Mice and Cheese
Many OTs have written about this Stretchy Mice and Cheese Toy, but what is written is usually all favorable. I think there are a couple things to consider before buying it so will point them out. But I'm not going to say too much about it.

The piece of cheese is 1.75" square and it comes with two mice. They are all made out of the same stretchy material.

The positives:
  • It's squishy and fun to play with.
  • The cute factor is off the charts.
  • It's a natural two-handed activity.
  • The parts are stretchy so you can hide the two mice inside the cheese and then stretch the cheese open to take the mice back out.

The negatives:
  • The cheese picks up dirt and gunk easily and it's not so easy (next to impossible) to get it off. You might want to ask anyone that will be playing with it to wash their hands first.
  • The mice are easy to rip. The tail, legs and ears are thin. Stretch open a hole and remove the mouse, don't try to pull on a body part to tug it out through a small hole. One of my mice is missing a foot and a tail and the other one is missing a foot, and that is with me sitting right there giving directions. If you work with someone you know would just yank on it, better to pass on this one. When pulling a mouse out of a hole there will be a temptation to pull on whatever piece is sticking out, and that will often be a tail, foot or ear. Resist that temptation.

That's all.
