Children learn through play. As an occupational therapist who works with children and youth, I use games and toys almost every day to help develop important cognitive, visual perceptual, motor, sensory, social, play and leisure skills. While many different types of activities can be used in therapy, this blog focuses on off-the-shelf games and toys that are accessible to most. Whether you are a therapist, parent, teacher, or a game lover like me, I hope you discover something useful while you are here. Learn a different way to play a game you already own or discover a new game for your next family game night. Either way, just go play. It's good for you!

The OT Magazine named The Playful Otter one of the Top 5 Pediatric OT Blogs.

Boom Blast Stix

Boom Blast Stix

I saw Boom Blast Stix on Amazon a while back and waited until I could find it second hand to buy it. I found it.

The words and pictures on the front of the canister are a wrap and will come off, leaving a plain blue, plastic canister and red, plastic lid. The canister with lid measures 10 1/8" tall and the red lid alone measures 2 1/8" tall. The lid has a dip on the top, making something like a shallow bowl. This is where you will stack the yellow pieces. The yellow pieces will store in the canister when you are not playing. The lid does not snap on very tight, so store upright or place a rubber band around the whole thing.

The yellow pieces are open and should be stored open when the game is over. To see what I mean by open, check out the piece I am holding in the image below. Compare it to the closed piece next to it. Before you start the game you will close these stix. This is a two-handed job and will require some hand strength as the plastic is flexible, but stiff.

When playing the stix will be stacked on top of each other until one of them snaps and sends them all flying. I had stacked almost all of them, and had started to wonder what the point was, when they went off. The pieces will fly a few feet away. Several went under the table and chair, and a few even landed on the window sill. There was no warning.

I think Boom Blast Stix is the type of game kids will tire of quickly, but it has over 300 reviews on Amazon, with a 4.5 star rating. This game was a finalist for the Toy of the Year Award in 2018. Go figure.

Object:

You lose if you are the person to place the last stix before they go off.

Set up:

You have a choice of whether to play on top of the lid only, or place the lid on top of the canister. The second way will make the pieces fly further when they go off. Snap all the stix together and place them nearby.

Play:

Players take turns placing one piece on the lid. You will end up stacking them on top of each other. Play until someone sets them off and loses the game.

In the can: 32 stix
