Children learn through play. As an occupational therapist who works with children and youth, I use games and toys almost every day to help develop important cognitive, visual perceptual, motor, sensory, social, play and leisure skills. While many different types of activities can be used in therapy, this blog focuses on off-the-shelf games and toys that are accessible to most. Whether you are a therapist, parent, teacher, or a game lover like me, I hope you discover something useful while you are here. Learn a different way to play a game you already own or discover a new game for your next family game night. Either way, just go play. It's good for you!

I SPY 3D

I SPY 3D

The classical I SPY figure ground game has stepped up to a new dimension with I SPY 3D. Put on the 3D glasses to bring I SPY 3D to life! Although the picture cards are loaded with words, there is no reading required for this game.

There are two types of cards in this game - Picture cards (in the 5 x 3 grid above) and rhyming riddle cards (4-line riddle cards above). All cards measure 3" x 4.5". The cardboard glasses have short bows, and while an adult will most likely not be able to wrap the bows around their ears, they do stay on.

Objects jump off of the picture cards while wearing the glasses. There are a lot of small words (simple sentences) across the picture cards and some jump forward while other words stay in the background. Maybe it is just my eyes, but I cannot read them with the glasses on. The cards are not printed in a distorted way as 3D things sometimes are, so you can read the cards and see the pictures without the glasses if you would rather play that way. The glasses just add something fun to the game. The back of the picture cards have the company logo on them. I have to admit I have not used this game much. Some of the objects on the picture cards are pretty small and may be hard to see from across the table for some.

The 3D glasses you will wear and a picture card

Each rhyming riddle card will have a 4 line riddle on the front and the pictures of the exact items you will be looking for on the back. Here is an example:

An ear of corn,
A shiny green nail,
2 clips and a pin,
A tiny red pail.

Read the riddle, then flip the card so players can see pictures of the items they are looking for.
Each item on each riddle card is found on a separate card. As you spot an item you will pick up that card and set it to the side. The longer you play, the fewer cards you will have to look over.

Object:
Have the most picture cards after four rhyming riddle cards have been played.

Set up:
Place all the picture cards in an 8 x 5 grid, picture sides up. Shuffle and place the stack of rhyming riddle cards near the grid. All players put on their 3D glasses.

Play:
Turn over one rhyming riddle card and read it aloud. Flip the card over so that all players can see the four items to find. All players play at once, scanning the grid. As players find an item they pick up and keep the picture card. Play until all four items have been found. Read a new riddle card and follow the same rules. After reading and finding objects for four different riddle cards, all players count the cards they have collected. The player with the most cards is the winner.

OTHER OPTIONS FOR PLAY:
  • Non-Competitive Game - Follow the rules as above except players place the picture cards they collect in a common pile. All players win.
  • 3D Draw - Set up as above. Stack the riddle cards nearby. Player each grab a different riddle card and look for their 4 items. After they are found, grab another card and go again. Keep playing until all the riddle cards have been claimed and items found. The winner is the person with the most riddle cards.
  • Solitaire Game - Play alone. After finding 4 items on a riddle card choose another riddle card and play again. Try reading 2 riddle cards and looking for 8 items at a time, then try 3 riddle cards. How many things can you remember? Play until all cards are claimed.
Try this:
  • Play without the glasses.
  • Use fewer cards. Start with four cards and a riddle card, ask the person to find the four items. Then move to two riddle cards and eight picture cards. Ask the individual to find the two sets of four. You will have to sort through the cards and find the right cards before playing as not all items are on each card.
  • Each person picks up the cards as he spots the object. Person with the most cards at the end is the winner.
  • Read only one item and search till it is found. Or read two items off the riddle card at a time. It's hard to remember four items, with descriptions, as you scan over item after item on the cards.
  • Forget the riddle cards. Set up the grid and then scan over the cards and choose one item. Announce it and see who can find it. Then they choose an item and repeat for the other players.
  • Set up the game in the suggestion above. Then give spatial clues for where the item can be found, such as in the the second column from the left, or the far right column, or the middle row, etc.
  • Work on figure ground, visual discrimination, manual dexterity, executive functioning skills, socialization skills, process skills, play and leisure exploration and participation

In the box: 40 3D Picture cards, 10 rhyming riddle cards, 4 pair 3D glasses (card stock)

  1. I lost the 3D glasses for this game. Could I make new ones? Do you know what they used for the lenses?

  2. I don't know what they use for the lenses. It looks like clear plastic but it's not. Somehow the lenses separate the items on the cards and make some seem closer. These types of glasses usually have one blue lens and one red lens. I don't have any idea what you would use to make the lenses. Sorry.
